Parish
Conference of St Vincent de Paul Society looks after the care of the poor
in the parish. They are part of a National conference.
The
Great Depression of 1930-31 put an end to the economic boom of the
late 1920s. Cos
Egan, a parishioner and Town Clerk, recalled these hard times:'Once
an old lady who had a block of land in William Street came to me.
She had bought it under contract and we were chasing the rates
of £40 or £50 . and the book value was £30!'
In
the days before governments provided social security, the poor and
destitute turned to private charitable groups usually run by religious
organisations. The
local St Vincent de Paul Society was established at St Felix in 1930.
The parcels of food and clothing prepared by the Society, with
the help of the Women's Sewing Guild, was a life line for
Bankstown's neediest families.
